Mall Mitzvahs
By Lauren HerskovicBetween working, dating and simply being fabulous, it gets hard for an independent Jewish woman to find the time to give back to her community. While serving food at a shelter or walking dogs at the Humane Society are on the top of our “we wish we could do” list, there just aren’t enough hours in the day. It will be good to know, then, that thanks to some very smart philanthropists, giving back is now as easy as a simple trip to the mall. So if you feel like it is time to give something back (and get something wonderful at the same time), check out these do-good goodies:
(Product) Red: Unless you have spent the past six months living under a rock, you have seen, heard and read about this amazing initiative created by Bono (of U2 fame) and Bobby Schriver. (Product) Red was created to raise awareness of the AIDS epidemic in Africa and provide its women and children with the medication they need to survive. How can you help? Simply head over to the Gap and pick up some super cute tees or jeans and Gap will donate a large portion of the proceeds to help those in need. Not a Gap fan? Maybe the (Red) Converse will appeal to you, or the brand new (Red) iPOD nano. There are many more brands involved in this program, so be sure to check out www.joinred.com to find out where you can shop…and stop the spread of AIDS.
Shop Pink: Every 13 minutes a woman dies of breast cancer. Therefore, it is likely that you have been affected by breast cancer in some way over the course of your life. And while great strides are being made in research and treatments, scientists are still a long ways from finding a cure. Money is definitely needed to continue this quest, and by purchasing some special pink products you can help. Contrary to belief, there is more out there than ribbon magnets and pins. You can get beautiful bracelets, adorable workout clothes, and even some cute pink Ugg look-alikes. If you love pink, be sure to check out www.pinkribbonshop.com.
School Pop: Education is the foundation from which we all grew to be the sexy and strong women we are today. Unfortunately, schools seem to get the short end of the funding stick in our economy. But, it doesn’t have to be that way. Try visiting www.schoolpop.com where thousands of stores, companies and brands have come together to benefit the education of America’s youth. Simply sign up, choose a school (there are 30,000 involved) and start shopping. 20% of every purchase will be given to your school of choice. Talk about a good purchase.
There are many websites, brands and stores that are taking part in similar philanthropic initiatives so be sure to look around and fill your closet while feeding your soul.
