Last-Minute Presents
By Sara CooperNeed a last-minute gift for your Chanukah honey? Been putting off a long holiday gift list because you just ain’t got the gelt? For the discriminating procrastinator, it may be difficult to find a gift that is both personal and readily available at a moment’s notice. Fortunately for those of us who find that the holidays (and birthdays, and anniversaries, and Valentine’s Day…) have an annoying way of sneaking up on us, there is no need to fear upcoming days of joy. There are loads of great last-minute gifts just waiting to be found!
When shopping at the last possible second, it is important to keep a clear head and remember these two simple rules: (1) Find a gift that is easily accessible, and (2) make sure the gift is appropriate. For instance, a potted plant is a great gift to bring a little warmth to the winter holidays, but be sure to avoid toxic plants like daffodils or poinsettias if the receiver of the gift has young children or pets. Even in a time crunch, it is vital to be aware of the lifestyle and taste of the recipient.
One surefire way to give a good quick gift is to throw together a personalized gift basket. Jot down a list of things the recipient enjoys. Is he or she crafty? Put together a scrapbooking kit by picking out some great papers, a pair of scissors, a glue stick, and some stickers from your local craft store. For the homebody, put together a movie-watching basket with DVDs, popcorn, and their favorite movie candy. A coffee gift basket, complete with a variety of gourmet coffees and a nice mug, is probably a safe bet for a student or a young professional.
For many, an interesting experience is the best gift of all. Why not give your friend the gift of a new skill? Many dance, art, and music studios offer gift certificates so that the recipient can enroll herself into a class that fits her schedule. Check out your local Y to find out about upcoming workshops and lectures. Many Ys, such as the 92nd Street Y in Manhatan allow you to purchase classes online, saving you a trip and some valuable time. On a similar note, tickets for events like plays, concerts, and games are almost always well received. Ticketmaster and Theater Mania are a couple of good sites for finding tickets to shows in many different cities. Extra points if you agree to go with.
Of course, there is something to be said for the age-old gift of literature. A book of poetry or a novel that reminds you of the recipient is always appreciated, especially with a personal note written on the inside cover. Likewise, a print or photograph that bears personal significance is an excellent present, especially if you have time to have it framed.
Are you good in the kitchen? Everyone loves baked goods: Not only are they delicious, but, unlike other holiday tchatchkes, they don’t take up any space (except in the tummy, which, let’s be honest, always has room for cookies). Dig up your grandma’s old recipes and roll up your sleeves. Don’t forget to wrap up all baked gifts as festively as possible. When it comes to holiday baked goods, there is no such thing as over the top.
Perhaps the kindest gift you can give is a donation to a good cause. Choose a cause that will mean something to your friend. For instance, for an animal lover, make a donation to the ASPCA; for the civil rights enthusiast, donate to Amnesty International. Most charities allow you to make a donation in an honoree’s name. For a list of reputable charities, check out Give.org.
If all else fails, you can’t go wrong with a bottle of wine. If you know what the recipient drinks, perfect, but if not, choose a wine that reflects your relationship. For a friend, choose a light, sweet dessert wine. For a boyfriend, girlfriend, or romantic interest, pick up a deep red. Stop by a nice wine shop and be sure to ask the associate for recommendations.
And if you are really, truly in a pinch, don’t panic. Friends will forgive you if you are a little late. Ultimately, holiday gift-giving is just an excuse to show some love, and it is most certainly the thought that counts. Happy Chanukah!
(And certainly, last minute or not, don’t forget to Shop Shebrew!)
